How to Read Your Tyre Size

Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall of the tyres already on your car. It looks like this: 205/55 R16 91V. The first number, 205, is the width of the tyre in millimetres. The second number, 55, is the profile, which is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the width. R means radial construction, and 16 is the wheel diameter in inches.

The last part, 91V, is the load index and speed rating. It shows how much weight the tyre can carry and the maximum speed it is built for. Your new tyres should match or exceed both figures. You can also find the correct size in the owner manual or on the sticker inside the driver door.

Popular Tyre Sizes in Dubai and the UAE

A few sizes cover a large share of the cars on Dubai roads. 195/65 R15 and 205/55 R16 fit many compact saloons such as the Toyota Corolla. 215/55 R17 and 235/45 R18 are common on family saloons such as the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima. 225/65 R17 is a frequent crossover size, and 265/65 R17 is widely used on 4x4s such as the Toyota Prado and Fortuner.

Larger wheels are popular across the UAE as well. Sizes for 20, 21 and 22 inch wheels are common on luxury SUVs and performance cars, and many of those vehicles use a different size on the front and rear axles. If that applies to your car, search each size separately.

Why the Correct Tyre Size Matters

Fitting the wrong size affects more than the look of the car. It can change the speedometer reading, braking distance, fuel use and the way the car handles, and it may cause the tyre to rub against the bodywork. It can also affect your insurance and the annual vehicle inspection.

Stay with the size your car maker recommends unless a specialist has advised a change. Vans and pickups often need commercial tyres, marked with the letter C, which are reinforced to carry heavier loads.
